Another theme I like to play with is monochrome-in-colour, which phrase I think I may just have invented! I’m not really a fan of black-and-white photography for the sake of it, unless the image is itself actually old, pre-dating colour photography. Returning to my old magazine theme, colour printing on quality paper was very expensive in the 1970’s and 80’s, resulting in limited circulation specialist publications, like spanking magazines, being restricted to a centre-spread, two facing pages and two inner-cover pages plus the two covers themselves. In all, seven leaves with a maximum of fourteen colour plates available, if you were lucky. Needless to say, with an interest in red bottoms that actually were red, it was these pages that I and, I imagine, most other “readers”(!) would turn to first.
Then I would turn to the monochrome images and, using the few colour plates as a mental reference, try to imagine the colours while cursing the publishers for not actually showing them to me, and no doubt charging me five times the cover price I had struggled to save up for in the first place.
This interest I now have in putting models in black and white clothing, then shooting them against a stark background but in colour, I think, stems from that.
